Setting goals is easy. Achieving them? That’s where most people struggle. Here are five proven strategies to help you set—and actually accomplish—your goals this year.

1. Use the SMART Framework

You’ve probably heard of SMART goals, but are you actually using them? Every goal should be:

  • Specific: “Exercise more” becomes “Run 3 times per week”
  • Measurable: Define clear metrics for success
  • Achievable: Challenging but realistic
  • Relevant: Aligned with your broader life vision
  • Time-bound: Has a clear deadline

2. Break Big Goals into Quarterly Milestones

A year-long goal can feel overwhelming. Break it down:

  • Q1: Foundation and learning phase
  • Q2: Building momentum
  • Q3: Pushing through challenges
  • Q4: Final push and reflection

This approach makes progress visible and maintains motivation throughout the year.

3. Connect Goals to Your “Why”

Goals without meaning rarely get accomplished. For each goal, ask yourself:

  • Why does this matter to me?
  • How will achieving this change my life?
  • What will I miss out on if I don’t pursue this?

Write your “why” next to each goal in your planner.

4. Create Implementation Intentions

Research shows that “implementation intentions” dramatically increase follow-through. The format is simple:

“When [situation], I will [action].”

Examples:

  • “When I wake up, I will immediately do 10 minutes of stretching.”
  • “When I feel stressed at work, I will take three deep breaths.”

5. Build in Regular Reviews

Goals need attention to stay alive. Schedule:

  • Daily: Quick morning intention setting
  • Weekly: Progress check and adjustments
  • Monthly: Deeper reflection and planning
  • Quarterly: Major review and goal refinement
